I had some vague ideas of how I was going to structure the headpiece going into it, but no real idea of how I was actually going to make it. I did a lot of research – looking at other peoples blogs, Rebel Legion help and some videos people had posted. I figured the easiest way was to make some kind of cap to build the whole thing around, rather than start at the top and work down. It was more of a work from the middle and out kind of project. I used - beige scuba fabric, EVA foam and a shit load of paint.

First I made a pattern of my head so I could make a cap out of EVA foam. I also looked like I was trying to hide from aliens, as I did the ‘wrap yourself in tin foil and cling film’ route. Once this was all done I took it off, drew out a pattern with sharpie then cut it out with EVA. I hot glued the cap together, then went back over the seams with some really strong cord thread that I have just to hold it all together.

Then I started on the montral points. To work out the height and width of these I did a fair bit of guestimating. Using screenshots as reference I worked out how big (ish) the whole thing should be on me, then how high the points should go / how long the lekku should go. I also worked out how wide I wanted them to be and the distance between the montral points. Here are my rough workings.

The montral points were where I hung the whole thing, so I made them also out of EVA foam and sewed them down to the cap once I had them in place. It just made the whole thing a little sturdier.

Then I started working out the front lekku/montrals. I knew they had to be 43 cm long to work with my height, and I decided on 13 cm to be the widest point of the lekku – roughly inline with my chin. I freehand the curve at the bottom of the lek until it was something I thought worked – not too pointy but not too round either.

Once I had two of these pieces I also made a long wedge piece, which I attached from the widest point to the top of the montral point. This gave it more of a shape and forced it out from my head – giving the silhouette that she has. I attached them to the cap by making covers for the montral points (see the photo, it doesn’t make much sense written down). Just to see how they hung I pinned them to the cap for the time being.

I was incredibly happy with how they were going at this point. The curve ended up working really well with how it hung over my shoulder. Yay! I also made a cover for the eva foam cap using the pattern I made for it, just so the foam was covered and so I had something to attach the fabric to. Now onwards to the final lek at the back.

Now I will admit that my least favourite parts of the headpiece are the lek at the back and the paint job, By this point I was really at con crunch time and massively rushed it, and I'm looking forward to going back and doing it better/making a better pattern. That being said, this is what I did.

Now if you look at Ahsoka her lekku are attached until her chin/just above her shoulder. So I measured the space between my lekku at the back at that point to make sure the back lek would go all the way across and they could join up nicely. Then, like I did with the front lekku, I measured how long I wanted it before freehanding the pattern. I also added in a wedge in the top half to give it more shape as it stood out from my head.

Again, not super happy with these. I stitched the lekku together down each side to the bottom of my ear/chin. I stitched this on the inside so the lekku have a dip between them and so you can't see the stitching. Once it was stitched it hung a lot better - that first image is just pinned, hence why it looks as puckered as it does.

Then it was onto painting! I chalked out the spacing, before going to town with this. I just used regular fabric paint but ones that dry soft (otherwise you may get weird cracking, always read the labels folks) Once all that painting was done I pretty much passed out (this was done the day before con aha) but it was nice to see it all done.

The final thing! It needs a lot of work going forward but the shape at the front is there! Hooray, hooray. J x
